COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nov. 7, 2008 – Michael Kimmel, author of “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men.,” takes a look at how young men deal with relationships, growing up, responsibility, the use of “Guy Code” and proceeds to help male youth navigate this rocky terrain.
The SUNY Stony Brook sociology professor will discuss his newest book and his research at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 12 in University Center Room 303 at UCCS. The event co-sponsored by Colorado College and UCCS.
Kimmel’s new book continues his focus on men and masculinity, specifically looking at young men, ages 16-26, and the male culture on college campuses.
Feminist icon Gloria Steinem said "Michael Kimmel's ‘Guyland’ could save the humanity of many young men—and the sanity of their friends and parents—by explaining the forces behind a newly extended adolescence. With accuracy and empathy, he names the problem and offers compassionate bridges to adulthood."
Kimmel is the editor of “Men and Masculinities,” a peer-reviewed, scientific journal on Men’s Studies and is a spokesperson of NOMAS (The National Organization For Men Against Sexism). Kimmel is the author or editor of more than 20 books, including “Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity," "Men Confront Pornography," "The Politics of Manhood," "The Gender of Desire" and "The History of Men." He also wrote “Manhood in America: A Cultural History,” which was hailed as the definitive work on the subject.
Kimmel also has worked outside the written medium to produce the documentary "Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990," which chronicled men who supported women’s equality since the founding of the country.
